What Is Collectors MD?
Collectors MD is a support-based movement and community for anyone navigating the emotional, financial, and psychological impact of compulsive collecting in today’s high-pressure hobby environment.
Whether you’re into sports cards, TCG, memorabilia, comics, art, sneakers, watches, handbags, coins, NFTs, gaming, or even traditional “retail therapy”, we exist for the moments when your hobby stops feeling healthy—and starts feeling like something else entirely.
Founded by collectors, for collectors, we know what it’s like to chase. To overspend. To feel stuck. To love the hobby deeply but still find yourself losing control.
We’re not anti-hobby. We’re pro-support. And we believe the two can—and must—coexist.
Our Approach
Collectors MD operates at the intersection of mental health, community accountability, and industry reform. Our goal is simple: to create a safe space for collectors who are looking to slow down, reset, and reconnect with why they collect in the first place.
We’re not here to sell you products or shame you for what you’ve spent—we’re here to offer support, ask better questions, and explore what it means to collect with purpose.
What We Offer

Our Team
Alyx Effron, Founder

Alyx Effron is a lifelong collector, marketer, and advocate for problem gambling awareness dedicated to creating a healthier future for the sports card and collectibles community. With over a decade of firsthand experience in the modern hobby and a deep understanding of the psychological, financial, and emotional dynamics at play, Alyx launched Collectors MD to bring structure, support, and accountability to an increasingly volatile space.
Professionally, Alyx has built his career at the intersection of media, advertising, and brand partnerships, working in advertising sales and marketing where he has helped brands and media platforms grow through strategic partnerships and storytelling. He earned his degree in Marketing from the Penn State Smeal College of Business, where he developed the foundation for the marketing and business strategy he brings to his work today.
Through his work at the intersection of media, advocacy, and wellness, Alyx has become a leading voice for responsible collecting. He created Collectors MD not only as a content and community platform, but as a mission-driven organization designed to address the real challenges collectors face in today’s break-driven, hype-fueled environment.
In addition to his work with Collectors MD, Alyx also works part-time with Right Choice Recovery, where he leads group counseling meetings for individuals struggling with gambling addiction. This work gives him direct experience supporting people navigating the real-life consequences of compulsive behavior, further informing the harm-reduction and education efforts he brings to the collectibles space.
From educational content and peer-support groups to partnerships with digital wellness tools and mental health providers, Alyx is focused on building safeguards, shifting norms, and ensuring that collectors of all ages can engage with the hobby in a more sustainable, balanced way.
His work continues to push for greater transparency, ethical marketing, and stronger consumer protections at a time when gambling-like mechanics have become increasingly embedded within modern collecting. Under Alyx’s leadership, Collectors MD stands as both a resource and a growing movement, grounded in empathy, accountability, and lived experience.

Conor McGrath, Director Of Partnerships

Conor McGrath is a lifelong collector whose love for sports and collectibles started as a kid opening packs, visiting local card shops, and learning about his heroes through cards.
Today, Conor brings that same passion to his research and writing across the collectibles space. His past work at Rally focused on exploring the data and stories that resonate with collectors, and he currently writes for Collectibles On SI, highlighting trends and narratives that make the hobby so compelling. He enjoys helping collectors better understand market movements while still celebrating what makes collecting fun in the first place.
Conor also brings strong business acumen to the collectibles world. He earned his MBA from the University of North Carolina with a focus on marketing and finance. While completing his MBA, he worked with sports marketing agency Wasserman, gaining valuable insight into the business side of sports and partnerships.
Alongside his work in business and collectibles, Conor has a background in psychology and mental health. He holds a master’s degree in mental health and a bachelor’s degree in psychology, giving him a unique perspective on addiction, motivation, and the emotional dynamics that can sometimes work against collectors’ best interests.
Outside of work, Conor is deeply committed to community involvement. He has volunteered multiple times at the Boston Marathon and has supported organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, among others.

Brandon Howard, Content Creator

Brandon Howard, known as Collector Charles, is a lifelong sports card collector, hobby commentator, and digital media creator focused on unpacking the culture, psychology, and evolving dynamics of the modern collecting landscape. After stepping away from the hobby for over two decades, his return brought a fresh and critical perspective, one rooted in both nostalgia and a desire to better understand the systems shaping today’s experience.
Through his YouTube channel, Collector Charles, he creates thoughtful, balanced content that explores collecting trends, hobby history, and the underlying mechanics that influence collector behavior. His work often challenges hype-driven narratives, calls out bad actors and unethical practices, and brings attention to the psychological patterns, such as FOMO, manufactured scarcity, and compulsive behavior, that many collectors experience but struggle to articulate.
Brandon also brings a background in journalism and media to his work. He has contributed to programming at Morehead State Public Radio and developed his writing voice through academic work and contributions to online publications. Across radio, writing, and digital platforms, he consistently provides a grounded, collector-first perspective that prioritizes clarity, honesty, and long-term thinking over short-term hype.
As a highly active and engaged member of the Collectors MD community since its early days, Brandon has become a trusted voice within the space, regularly participating in weekly meetings, supporting fellow collectors, and reinforcing the importance of accountability and intentional collecting. His alignment with the mission extends beyond participation, as he actively advocates for Collectors MD through his content and platform.
At his core, Brandon represents the everyday collector, someone who collects what he loves, speaks openly about the realities of the hobby, and isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo. His work continues to help push the conversation forward, making the hobby more transparent, more self-aware, and ultimately more sustainable for the people within it.
